"Their place is your place"
Liam and Michelle Moloughney have built their dream dining room at the bottom of Vernon Avenue in Clontarf. You are invited to dine in their converted Victorian house, at once roomy and cosy, with exposed brick walls, open fireplaces and floor to ceiling windows that look out on a bustling Vernon Avenue.
"The best of grub"
Drop in and settle down at one of the assorted tables and chairs and peruse the menu which includes smaller dishes such as Crushed Broadbeans on Toast; a Summer Salad of peaches, green beans and feta; Chicken Liver Pate; or the Fennel, Apple and St Tola Goats Cheese salad. Liam’s Fish-Plate features salmon and mackerel, both of which are hot smoked in the kitchen, Cray-fish, marinated squid and creamed mussels with a saffron aioli and home-made brown bread.
Main courses such as the Moroccan Spiced Chicken with apricot, pistachio and mint couscous and the Pan-Fried Lambs’ Liver & Bacon are quite special, without being too rich. For something not too fancy but properly delicious, try the Hereford Ribeye with chunky chips and Bernaise or a simply cooked piece of fish and some buttery new potatoes. But don’t get so full that you miss the saffron poached pears with hot chocolate sauce, shortbread biscuits and vanilla ice cream! Meanwhile, Junior Spag Bol with a Chocolate Brownie for afters, are a hit with the young ‘uns.
Moloughney’s is popular for coffee and a scone or lunch and breakfast too. Hey, Sleepy-heads, Omelettes, Buttermilk Pancakes or a good old grill served until 1.30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday!
“Sip, don’t guzzle Darling”
No wine drinker in the extended Moloughney household was spared the task of putting together the affordable wine list, with most wines under €25. They are particularly proud of their Portuguese red house wine from the Douros Valley, the utterly quaffable blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca by Quinta Sa De Baixos at €20. Not to mention the excellent Côtes du Rhone from Domaine Boisson, a steal for €22. After a stroll on the promenade you might enjoy a glass of Riesling and share the generous Irish and French cheese plate with home-made chutney and crackers. If you are feeling a bit thirsty, they make a mean cocktail too!
"We've got company...."
On Sunday afternoon wind up the weekend listening to soul, blues and folk sung by professional mezzo soprano Elizabeth Burke, or tapping your foot to Sean Boland’s mellow classics.
“I had a dream last night, and it fit me like a glove…”
Michelle and Liam’s mission is to deliver simple but excellent seasonal Irish food for the best value possible. With this in mind, they have designed a mid-week special of two courses for €19.90, or two courses for two people including a bottle of wine for €55, available all night, Tuesday to Thursday and as an early bird on Friday and Saturday.
